Cara Frank is an acupuncturist, herbalist, teacher and author. In practice for over 30 years, Cara has treated thousands of patients with Chinese Medicine. She is the president of China Herb Company, which was the first mail order compounding Chinese herbal dispensary in the United States. She is the Academic Director of the Department of Chinese Herbology at the Won Institute of Graduate Studies. Cara is a popular lecturer, known especially for her clear and humorous teaching style.
Cara was raised in a health food store in Brooklyn NY. When she was 8 she cartwheeled 5 miles from Greenwich Village through Soho and Chinatown and across the Brooklyn Bridge. For over 30 years she has had the same crazy passion for Chinese medicine.
At 17, Cara had her first acupuncture treatment. At 20 she enrolled in acupuncture school. 1n 1998 she went to China to study where she fell deeply in love with herbs and has never recovered.
She has recently completed a book of commentary on 45 chapters of ears, eyes, nose and throat disorders for People’s Medical Publishing House. Publication is expected in 2015
Cara believes that Chinese Medicine is one of the most pragmatic and effective options to treat disease and alleviate suffering. Even after so many years of practice, Cara derives enormous satisfaction and feels huge gratitude helping people to feel better.
A 1983 graduate of the New England School of Acupuncture, she received her herbal training was with Ted Kaptchuk, Simon Mills and at the Xi Yuan Hospital in Beijing, China. It was in China, that her love affair with Chinese herbs took root, and flourished. Cara has advanced training in supportive cancer care, pediatrics, Chinese Medical classics and cosmetic acupuncture. Recently, Cara has studied with Dr. Huang Huang of Nanjing. She has also volunteered treating firefighters and first responders. She freely donates acupuncture treatments to community fund-raising benefits.
Cara has developed a line of her own herbal formulas, including formulas for respiratory diseases, cancer support and pediatric conditions under the brand name “Six Fishes Chinese Herbs.”
Cara is devoted to Chinese Herbal education. She has taught the topic since 1996. From 2003 to 2011 she was the director of the department of Chinese herbology at the Tai Sophia Institute. Currently, she is the Academic Director of the Department of Chinese Herbology at the Won Institute of Graduate Studies and is the programs’ primary instructor. Using classical texts in concert with modern technology, she has developed a rigorous and dynamic program.
Cara lives with her husband, her college-age children and her puppy in Center City Philadelphia where she maintains a full acupuncture and Chinese medicine practice. When she’s not teaching, treating patients or writing, you can usually find her in her award-winning garden or in the kitchen cooking something delicious to feed her friends and family.
