Enjoy the Sunshine! But Safely

Chimpanzee and a woman sunbathing

Cara O. Frank, L.OM.

While I appreciate the sun’s warmth, it’s vital to grasp the benefits of safe sun exposure. Sunlight, a natural source of Vitamin D, is crucial for our health. By understanding this, we can strike a balance, avoiding excessive exposure that can lead to skin damage and even skin cancer.

If you bask in the sun’s warmth, here are a few common-sense precautions: The skin is the body’s largest organ. It reflects our health and age. Therefore, there is much concern that sunbathing can lead to an increase in skin damage and skin cancer. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays can increase the production of free radicals that can adversely affect the integrity of collagen in the skin. Over time, our skin becomes wrinkled, cracked, aged, and brittle. For smokers, the effects are multiplied. Research suggests that skin cancer is cumulative over a lifetime. It begins with overexposure andsevere sunburns during childhood.

It’s alarming to discover that many sunscreens we use to protect our families contain toxic chemicals. Unknowingly, we may be exposing our loved ones to endocrine disruptors and carcinogenic substances. This is a serious concern that we all need to be aware of.

The Environmental Working Group has published a sound and comprehensive list of safe and unsafe sunscreens.

Here are a few helpful tips and precautions to take when you’re soaking in the summertime sun:
