Herbology is one of Chinese Medicine’s most important modalities and one of the essential differentiating features of Six Fishes. In fact, founder Cara Frank established China Herb Company, the first herbal dispensary in the United States.  Cara is considered a subject matter expert and thought-leader on Chinese Herbology.

In 1988, while studying at the Xi Yuan hospital in Beijing, Cara Frank fell in love with Chinese herbal medicine. Returning to the U.S., she wasted no time building a personal herb dispensary. Soon, other acupuncturists began asking Cara to fill formulas for their clients, and she quickly saw the need for a high quality, full service dispensary that honors the traditions of Chinese herbology. In 1991 she founded China Herb Company. Today, as the first mail order Chinese herb dispensary in the U.S., China Herb Company is a committed advocate of the tradition of custom written herbal formulas. Cara Frank is the

The practitioners at Six Fishes specialize in custom Chinese herbal formulations, in which classical formulas are modified to treat patients’ exact needs. At Six Fishes, Chinese herbal  formulas usually contain between 6-18 herbs.  with each component of the formula designed to enhance or balance the others. Herbal formulas may be administered in raw form to decoct, powdered concentrates, liquid concentrates, as well as pills and capsules.

Six Fishes in-house dispensary, China Herb Company,  maintains over 400 raw herbs, over 100 herbal extracts and more than 150 granular concentrates. To insure safety, herbs are tested for pesticides, bacteria and heavy metals and employ cGMP (current good manufacturing) practices.

At Six Fishes, most of our patients are treated with both acupuncture and herbs, giving us the flexibility of using each modality to its best effect. As Chinese Medicine is based on treating the root cause of a disorder, while also resolving its symptoms, our acupuncture and herbal approach enables us to treat a variety of symptoms that are part of the same pattern. This holistic and integrated approach makes it a deeply restorative and highly effective form of medicine. As experts and educators in the field, Cara Frank and her team frequently consult with other acupuncturist’s patients for herb consultations and enjoy sharing their deep wealth of knowledge.

Margaret C.

Cara Frank is my ‘go to’ for Chinese herbal medicine. She has thirty years experience treating patients with acupuncture and herbs. Cara created the herbal medicine program at Won institute and is a current faculty member. She really knows her stuff! Her company, China Herb is right on the premises so my herbs are fresh and of the highest quality. Her knowledge of herbs is top notch. Booking appointments is easy and can be done online, front desk staff is very friendly, and even though it’s in the city, parking is not that bad! Want a trusted practitioner for Chinese herbs? Go see Cara!
